Meet the Team: Caffeine Edition

image

We here at Faherty Brand, with our long work nights and early mornings, enjoy partaking in mass caffeine consumption. With this shared fixation in mind, we decided to ask some of our team, “How do you take your coffee?” Our fun little anthropological experiment yielded hysterical results. See for yourselves!

Mike Faherty (Co-CEO/Creative Mastermind/Frequent Flyer Mile Hoarder of the Year): Large, iced with whole milk.

Alex Faherty (Co-CEO/Finance Warrior/The”Dawg”): Large, iced with whole milk (they are identical twins after all). Or however Kerry makes it.

Kerry Faherty (President/Alex’s better half/Meditation Guru): Hot with a dash of cinnamon. It’s an amazing antioxidant and helps boost your memory!

Peter Tufo (COO/Excel Wizard/Sarcasm Distributor): I take my coffee black like my soul. But really I don’t put anything else in it because that takes too much time.

Kathryn Oliva (Director of Public Relations/Customer Service Extraordinaire/Office Mom/Resident Vegetarian): I don’t drink coffee! Team tea all the way baby. Are we talking summer or winter drinks? In the summer I drink iced matcha with a little bit of agave. But for winter I go with green tea lattés with no sweetener and extra matcha.

Michele Park (Womenswear Designer/Optimist/Trend-master): Light roast with extra ice and whole milk. Yum! Wait now I want one…

Cody James (Menswear designer/Hip Hop Aficionado/Brooklyn Boy): Black, cold-brew iced coffee…with a salted rim. Just kidding. I was thinking about margaritas.

Stay tuned for more of our “Meet the Team” posts and stay caffeinated out there!

Scenes from the Road: West Coast Trailer Tour

Miles and miles. Coast to coast. Since April, the Faherty mobile beach house has been around the country and back, bringing Faherty goods to music festivals, resorts, beaches, stores and, most importantly, BBQ places. Hitched to our pick up truck, our 10 x 20 reclaimed barn wood trailer was custom built by friends and expands into a fully functioning beach bungalow with porches, a sound system and skylights. For us, it’s our home away from home (it’s just a missing a shower).

We caught up with Caitlin Tralka, our road warrior extraordinaire, to get an inside look at life on the road. From what we’ve seen, it’s been one hell of a ride.

1. How do you know the Fahertys?

We grew up together on the Jersey Shore.  Originally, I was their friend “Andrew’s little sister.”  When I was “cool enough” to hang with the big kids, I beach cruised over to the Faherty’s backyard bashes and eventually proved to be a friend.  I could always guarantee a big smile and a hug from the twins.

Hanging with the bros at a trade show.

 2. Who are you on the road with now?

The west coast tour team is made up of the Triple C-Doggs: Chalo, Chelsea and myself.

In-N-Out is a must on the road. Protein Animal Style.

Lounging in our Faherty gear.

3. What cities have you hit so far?

This spring and summer has been quite the adventure!  I started in April at the music festival Coachella in Palm Desert and then made my way over to Fort Worth and Austin, TX.  We rallied for the weekend like rock stars in Austin (love that city) and than traversed to Poole Shop in Charlotte, North Carolina and back up to Jersey for a home cooked meal and a re-charge. After Memorial Day, we visited Raleigh, Charleston, Wilmington, Atlanta, DC, Virginia Beach AND Nashville (love Nashville).

Trunk show at Stag - some of the best men’s shopping in Austin!

Because of awesome feedback, we immediately started planning our West Coast September Tour.  In July and August, the trailer made a few very important stops around NYC, Montauk and Nantucket before bee-lining to Vegas for Project, a men’s trade show.  From there, we picked up Chelsea in Scottsdale and the three amigos were on our way west.

Enjoying a day off at the beach, in typical Faherty fashion.

We spent Labor Day weekend at the five-star Fairmont Princess Resort and then rallied up to San Fran before heading down to LA for a debut on the morning show Good Day LA. Last week we were in Costa Mesa at Bloomingdale’s South Coast Plaza.

Having fun on the set of our Good Day LA segment.

Next up? Santa Barbara for an event with our friends at K. Frank on State Street, then down to the infamous Abbot Kinney Festival. Our final destination is back to SoCal for a visit to Fashion Valley and Fashion Island, Newport Beach.  Let the good times roll!

4. Which city has been your favorite?

Definitely San Francisco. We celebrated my 31st and we painted the city purple! I love it there.  The cherry on top was the warm welcome to Faherty Brand – it’s a mutual love affair.

5. Favorite road trip jams?

Coffee house on Sirius XM even though Chalo (our driver) bans romantic tunes on the road.

6. Best drink you’ve had? (Alcoholic or Non)

Omission, duh. (Best gluten free beer around). “Drinking is believing.”

7. Best restaurant you’ve been to?

Nopa in San Fran. Hands down.

8. What’s been the most popular Faherty item?

On the road… swimsuits.  Hipster bottoms for the ladies (maybe because I don’t hesitate to lift my dress to show the uniqueness of the suit) and flannels all around.

image

Had a blast in Wilmington! We found that not wearing shirts was a great sales tactic.

9. Any weird/memorable experiences?

Too many. Every day is weird when you’re on the road!

image

Juice makes for one happy road warrior!

image

West Coast = wide open spaces!

10. Favorite place you’ve crashed?

My boyfriend’s house in Leucadia. :)

Conor Cook’s Australian Adventures in All-Day Shorts

image

The spring of 2013 was dedicated to exploration, adventure, and surf.  I left my management consulting job in San Francisco in March and set off on a four month surf trip through New Zealand, Australia, and Indonesia.  My goals were simple: chase waves, see wild places, meet crazy people, and live a vagabond’s life. With little more than a surfboard, some tees, and the Faherty Brand All Day shorts, I spent April and May living out of a 1993 Toyota Hiace Pop Top van, driving 4,600 miles around most of Australia.

ASIA DIARIES: CRAFTING OUR SPRING COLLECTION

image

Believe it or not, the design process of our Spring 2014 collection is already well underway. If you haven’t had a chance to come by our Manhattan showroom/studio to check out our sketches, fabric inspirations, and color palettes, you’re in for a delightful surprise. We’re just wrapping up another trip to our manufacturers in Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City to be exact) and India (Chennai to be exact) where we’ve spent the past few weeks perfecting pattern pieces, fits and garment construction. Check out some of the snapshots below from our Asia Diaries; time well spent crafting all the clothes you’ll want to wear to the beach.

Behind the Scenes of our Summer Dresses Shoot

image

For those of you that don’t know, we got a house on Lake Montauk for the summer until the end of August - it’s the location of our weekend headquarters, in fact. We went out last Sunday to shoot our new Beach Dress collection, catching the first sunny day of a rainy weekend. Check out some of the outtakes below from the photo shoot, shot right in our own backyard (literally) !

The Never Ending Summer Tour : Week 1

image

Hey everybody,

Our road trip has begun! We’d been working on our custom built store-on-wheels (doubling as a beach shack) for the past year and finally took it on the road at the beginning of this month. We started in New York City, opening the mobile beach shack up right in the heart of the city, causing quite a stir amongst urbanites who wish they were at the beach. We spent the following weekend in New Jersey, hanging out with hometown heroes and friends in our awesome new digs. And from here, we began our trip down the eastern seabord, stopping at the Atlantic coast hotspots of Richmond, Charlotte, Charleston and Atlanta.

Colors and Craft: Our Jewelry

image

On our last trip to Guatemala to work with the artisans creating our beach wraps (see previous post “Responsible Weaving”), we made time to explore the region, home to many indigenous Mayan people of various tribes. While the artisans are well known for their weaving and embroidery skills, many are also skilled in glass-bead jewelry (which requires weaving technique as well). From reaches of Lake Atitlan in Guatemala spanning to Chiapas, Mexico, we prowled local markets for colorful, one-of-a-kind jewelry to go with our equally unique swimwear.

Notes from Asia: Making Swimwear

image

A few times a year we take a trip to Asia to work alongside our manufacturing partners in Taiwan and Vietnam. Being at the location of where our signature fabric is recycled from plastic bottles and sewn into swimwear allows us to oversee every stitch and detail as it is being made, ensuring that the highest quality garment is created. While in Asia, we also  begin to think about product for the next season and work ahead to develop additional premium fabrics in beautiful, eye-catching prints. Our trips to Asia are grueling, as long days are crammed with every part of the swimwear-making process, but they are always inspiring and thoroughly worthwhile…and there’s always a moment to catch a wave amidst the busy days.
